Driver designs have seen the most rapid improvement of any clubs over the last several years

with the advent of high-tech design software, supercomputers and launch monitors. But it was PING that first saw the benefits of the larger clubhead, dating all the way back to the mid-70s with the introduction of the perimeter-weighted Karsten series. Considered large for its day, the laminated maple design introduced the concept of “forgiveness” into the driver category. Since then designs have advanced tenfold as material and manufacturing improvements have given engineers the ability to precisely position weight for optimized launch conditions while creating ultra-thin, highly responsive faces for increased ball speed.
